Ranchers give cattle growth hormones to speed weight gain, giving the beef more flavor andmaking it more tender.

Most fruits and vegetables are sprayed with pesticides to protect the food from bacteria, insects and weeds.

Raspberries are bred with wild species to increase fruit size, extend the season and resist disease.

Apples are waxed to improve appearance, prevent moisture loss and keep firmness. Although apples originally have a waxy coating, about half of it is washed off at fruit packaging sheds to get rid of chemicals and dust.

Kiwi are genetically modified to make a flatter fruit. Because of this more fruit fit in each crate, causing lower shipping costs.
