75 lbs of colored powder to bring you THIS + Fall Mini Session Event!

What does…

75 pounds of colored powder

A 24ft / 12ft tarp

4 seal-able plastic heavy duty containers

2 hours of setup

5 hours of cleanup

3 rambunctious boys

...ALL have in common?

Besides being a HUGE time-suck, mess, and leaving my hands looking like a smurph...it’s ALL in preparation for our Fall Mini Session Event!

The event is a 3-day event with 12-15 minute mini sessions, with gorgeous and fun “normal” family/children's portraits at the beginning, and 2-5 minutes of “not normal” color fight fun at the end! (get as messy/not messy as you want! The powder is food-grade and washable)

"Normal" photo session at the beginning - some formal, some goofy!

And, as always, WE’LL be the ones to clean up the mess!

Before I get into ALL of the details, let me share just how fun the mess was!

All the FUN of a color run, WITHOUT the "run"!

***NOTE: Athletes, dancers, cheerleaders, couples, you do NOT need young children to participate in these photos!

Fall Family Mini Sessions + color fight kicker at the end.

Think 10-15 minute photo sessions to get a grand family portrait update for this year’s Holiday cards, AND the last 2-3 minutes will be a BLAST of throwing red and green colored powder at each other! (Food grade powder, washes out of clothing easily) Your kids will love to get the chance to throw the powder in the air and at each other.

That’s right, the first 10 or so minutes is for getting heartwarming, tickling, bear-hugging images of you and your family. The LAST 2-3 minutes is for getting rambunctious!

And you know what ALWAYS (ok...95% of the time) makes kids behave for family photos? The chance to do something rambunctious & naughty!

While the color fight portion is OPTIONAL, I recommend you do it, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime kind of thing! Because honestly...I’m not sure when or IF I’ll be doing something like this again, mostly because of the mess it creates!

Who this is perfect for:

If you’ve been trying to drag your husband to family photos, but he isn’t diggin’ it...this is perfect! Short, sweet, AND fun!

If you’ve had a traditional, longer 45-60 minute family portrait session done in the past 1-2 years and don’t want to invest in a full on session, this is perfect for you.

If you love having your photos taken, SO MUCH that you do it multiple times a year, and this time you’d really just like a nice portrait for your Christmas Card and a few gifts, and you don’t want to go full on in for an album, this is perfect!

If you don’t know WHAT to get your parents for the Holidays, because, let's face it, they buy everything they want! Then this is PERFECT for you! Photos are grandma’s DREAM for a Christmas gift!

If you ARE a grandparent, and want photos with your grandkids! Or, if you want to give one of these sessions as a “pre-holiday” gift...as a “hint-hint, nudge-nudge” for what YOU really want for Christ

If you just don’t have the time to put together everything for a full on portrait session. Where DID the year go? And now it’s almost Thanksgiving, Black Friday, and CHRISTMAS!

FINALLY, a photo session your kids will be EXCITED about, and where you don't need to worry if they misbehave (because misbehaving is the point of THIS session!)

You might be wondering - Can I JUST have my kids photographed? The answer is - yes. Though, I encourage you to BE in the photos as well!

Your mom HATES cliche Mothersday Cards + The 5 Minute Formula for a Meaningful Mother's Day Card Message

You stare blankly at the greeting card for 5 minutes,

then scribble, “thanks for being such a great Mom!”

Or worse,

you write nothing.

You just sign your name below the corny card greeting that 10,000 other moms are getting.

And then you justify it.

She knows you love her.

You got her that cheese grater she wanted, so it’s ok you can’t think of anything to say.

Well I’ve got some brutal news for you.

When I asked my personal page what their favorite Mothersday Gift of all time was?

An ongoing theme was “Letters from my kids.”

Because it’s how you make her feel, not what you buy that matters.

And frankly, moms aren’t ever going to ask for what they really want - for you to make them feel appreciated, like they’re a good mom.

Because asking for that would be kinda weird, right?

But I’ve got you covered.

I’m going to teach you my 5-minute formula for writing a card message that will make your Mom feel great, and at the end I’ll even give you a bonus idea for taking it one step further.

The 5 Minute Formula for a Meaningful Mother's Day Card Message

Step 1: Get specific.

When you aren’t specific, you can’t think of anything to say.
And “I appreciate you” doesn’t mean crap if you don’t say what you appreciate her FOR.

Let me give you an example from the book “Made to Stick”.

Take 10 seconds, and think of as many things in this world that are white. OK. Done? Great.

Now take another 10 seconds, and think of as many white things you can that are in your refrigerator. It was probably much easier to think of white things in your refrigerator because you had less options to take from. It’s the same when you’re trying to think of a compliment for your mother.

So get specific, and answer 1 or 2 of the questions below:

When you were a child, what did your mom always do for you when you were sick (my mom made red Jello and let us drink 7up):

In the past year, how did your mom help you when you were in a bind? Did she babysit your kids last minute? Send you a copy of your favorite recipe that you had to have made for the bake sale that night?

What annoying thing or habit do you always do that your mom puts up with?

What life lessons has your mom taught you? Has she taught you how to cook a Thanksgiving meal? That family comes before work? Or that flipping off the guy that cut you off is OK so long as he’s from out of state?

What is one of your favorite childhood memories with your Mother? Was it a specific family vacation? Or how she would spend an hour every Saturday teaching you how to read?

Step 2:

Pick 1-2 of your favorite answers above, and make it into your Mother's Day Card Message.

Step 3:

Save your answers as a word doc, and use the rest of your answers for the year to come, for things like her Birthday, Grandparents day, or just a nice little note to send her when she’s had a bad day.

Now that you’ve written such a thoughtful, heart-warming message for your mom, it doesn’t even matter what card you pickup at Wal-Mart.

Take it 1 Step Further

Take it 1 Step Further to Blow Your Mothers Mind

What you say to your mom is heartwarming.

And when you can create something she can hang on her wall and feel good about every day?

Now that’s powerful enough to change how she feels on a daily basis.

I’ve teamed up with a few of my favorite ladies to create something that will make your mom feel beautiful, loved, appreciated, and mix in your own words about why you love her so much.

The Smell of Forest Fires will Transport your Children like Marty McFly

Your Kids will go back to the future like Marty McFly.

Someday, the smell of campfire will remind our kids of the summer of 2015.

They will breath in the dry, hot air, and be transported to today.

The summer when mom didn’t scold them for making a scene - but encouraged them to dance like maniacs and sing as loud as their lungs would let them.

The summer of skinned knees, mud caked under their fingernails, of water balloons exploding in on their chest.

Back when they didn’t know what stress meant.

When they ran wild in the yard and never thought about what others thought.

The cool breeze through the curtains at night before there was an air conditioner.

The damp morning grass between their toes.

The warm bath with bee’s that fly in the water after you spin their wings.

Your kids will long for these moments.

Soulful photo of your kids aren’t frivolous - they’re a necessity.

Because to them? These are the days they will long to remember.

I have NEVER been so excited for a dump truck to dump...until now :)

I have never felt like a 5-year old boy.

Heck, I've never felt like a BOY (except for some days when I shower the night before, sleep on my hair soaping wet, and instead of looking like a wet rat, I throw a ball-cap on top of my head).

But last night?

There I was, outside of Montana Resources, camera on my tripod, SO GIDDY that this truck the size of a house was going to dump it's load (ok now I sound like myself talking about my 14-month old...never mind, lets not go there).

And as my camera did it's 30-second exposure thing, I just sat there in awe, watching this beast let tons of rock fall out...this beast, that as my children say when we drive home on Continental from grandma and grandpas, "look so small."

That's right, they "look little."

Which, when you're on Continental, is true. They totally LOOK little...but they are the size of a small house, or really like the size of a double garage, but lifted up higher on wheels the size of two Pontiac Bonneville stacked on top of each other (actually, probably taller).

I'm in awe.

Awe of the machinery.

Awe of the workers.

Awe of this city that's built on mining, and keeps it's pride on what this town is built from.

Awe that if it weren't for mining here in Butte, who knows where the metal for the wars would have come from.

Awe that what we, or rather they, do at MRI travels around the country, likely even the world.

Check out the photos, let me know what you think.

****NOTE: be sure to go all the way to the bottom, to see 4 minutes worth of trucks dumping, moving, etc!

BELOW: a 30 second exposure.

Truck 1 dumping, truck 2 hanging out, truck three moved from the left all the way to the right, and stopped there for half of the photo. The sky is orange because it's fog, and the street lights reflect off of the fog/clouds.

The ominous glow of the shovel above reflects in the fog, creating an almost volcano like effect.

What else do I LOVE about the mine?

The people....

Yep, the people.

This "mine princess" Genna Gardner wanted photos at Montana Resources, since her family has a pretty big history in mining. You might recognize her Grandpa's name, former MRI President Frank Gardner from a recent article about Montana Resources. He had a BIG part in making sure the mine re-opened under Denis Washington. (I would link the article, but when I google it, only older articles pop up)

Interested in Fall, Winter, or Urban/Mining Family Portraits?

Drop me a line, and I'll get back to you with more info!

Even in the background of family photos, you'll often see Montana Resources. And everybody in Butte loves it - it's part of the history here - part of the background.

It may be faint - but the mine is in the background.

And then there are the other mines. The underground mines, the headframes. I can't even COUNT home many family portraits I've done with head frames in the background!
